Pelindo Regional 4 Anticipates Increase in Ship and Passenger Traffic During Eid 1446 H

HARIAN.NEWS, MAKASSAR – PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 4 forecasts a surge in passenger and ship traffic at its managed ports during this year’s Eid homecoming season.
The company predicts a 3% increase in passenger numbers and a 5% rise in ship movements compared to the same period last year, indicating a growing preference for sea transportation among travelers.
According to Abdul Azis, Executive Director 4 of Pelindo Regional 4, data from the previous year identified five key ports with the highest passenger traffic during the Eid holiday: Makassar Port, Balikpapan Port, Ambon Port, Parepare Port, and Ternate Port.
Meanwhile, the five busiest ports in terms of ship traffic were Manado Port, Ternate Port, Ambon Port, Kendari Port, and Makassar Port.
To accommodate the anticipated surge, Pelindo Regional 4 has implemented several preparations, including upgrading port facilities such as passenger waiting areas and other supporting infrastructure to ensure a comfortable experience for travelers.
Additionally, operational efficiency is being optimized by increasing personnel on-site to streamline embarkation and disembarkation processes. The company is also intensifying coordination with key stakeholders, including the Port Authority (KSOP), shipping operators, and security forces, to ensure smooth operations.
Safety and security measures have also been strengthened, with routine inspections of facilities and vessel readiness. Furthermore, digitalization initiatives have been introduced to enhance passenger access to ship schedules and port services.
Increasing Passenger and Ship Traffic at Major Ports
Yusida M. Palesang, Division Head of Operations at Pelindo Regional 4, stated that last year, Makassar Port recorded the highest passenger traffic during the Eid holiday, with 114,255 travelers embarking and disembarking. This year, that number is expected to rise to 117,683.
The following ports are also forecasted to experience increased passenger movement:
Balikpapan Port: from 93,668 to 96,478 passengers
Ambon Port: from 90,194 to 92,900 passengers
Parepare Port: from 82,328 to 84,798 passengers
Ternate Port: from 62,909 to 64,796 passengers
Regarding ship traffic, Yusida projected a 5% increase at the following ports:
Manado Port: from 153 to 161 ships
Ternate Port: from 143 to 150 ships
Ambon Port: from 105 to 110 ships
Kendari Port: from 91 to 96 ships
Makassar Port: from 87 to 91 ships
The homecoming season is expected to peak from H-15 onwards, reflecting the continued preference for sea transportation in eastern Indonesia.
“Pelindo Regional 4 is committed to providing the best service for travelers,” Abdul Azis affirmed. “We will continue to enhance facilities and operations to ensure a safe, comfortable, and seamless travel experience. With strong coordination among all parties, we are confident that this year’s homecoming season will be even better than last year’s.”
As a state-owned enterprise (BUMN) specializing in port services, Pelindo will closely monitor homecoming traffic until the return phase after Eid. Passengers are urged to check their ship schedules, arrive early at the port, and adhere to safety procedures.
