Pelindo Regional 4 Prepares for 12.5% Surge in Holiday Passengers with Enhanced Port Services

HARIAN.NEWS, MAKASSAR – PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) or Pelindo Regional 4 has announced its readiness to handle the surge in passenger activity during the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year holidays. With a projected increase in passengers of 12.5 percent compared to the previous year, Pelindo Regional 4 ensures optimal service in all ports under its management, especially in the Eastern Indonesia Region.

Abdul Azis, Executive Director 4 of Pelindo Regional 4, said the number of passengers is estimated to reach 2,165,815 people during this period. This predicted hike is driven by the addition of RoRo vessel routes, such as the Surabaya-Balikpapan-Palu and Surabaya-Lembar-Waingapu-Kupang routes.

“This predicted increase is also influenced by the rise in passenger movement from a number of main ports such as Makassar, Ambon, Jayapura, and Bitung, as well as international passenger movement from routes to Malaysia and Singapore,” said Abdul Azis in a meeting with the media in Makassar, on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

Peak Passenger Movement

The Christmas and New Year holiday season this time is estimated to start on D-15 to D+15. The peak Christmas departure flow is predicted to occur on December 20 to 22, 2024, while the peak return flow is estimated to occur on January 3 to 5, 2025.

As one of the busiest ports in the Eastern Indonesia Region, Makassar Port is projected to experience a significant surge in passengers. According to Abdul Azis, this port is a focal point due to the high number of locals celebrating Christmas and New Year in this region.

To anticipate the surge in passengers, Pelindo Regional 4 has made various improvements and added facilities at the passenger terminal. The facilities, such as a more comfortable waiting room, boarding bridges, elevators, health room, and children’s playroom, have been improved. In addition, tents and portable toilets will be provided to support passenger comfort.

“Our port is also equipped with auto-gates and an improved security system to speed up the sterilization process and ensure passenger safety,” Abdul Azis added.

Collaboration with Stakeholders

Pelindo Regional 4 says it is collaborating with various parties, including the Port Authority, vessel operators, local governments, and the Port Health Office (KKP). A health officer duty schedule has also been prepared to ensure prompt handling of passengers’ health needs.

Iwan Sjarifuddin, General Manager of Pelindo Regional 4 Makassar, conveyed that good coordination between stakeholders is the key to smooth operations during the holiday period.

“We urge people to arrive early at the port to avoid long queues. Pelindo Regional 4 is committed to providing the best services so that the journey is safe and comfortable,” Iwan said.

With this thorough preparation, Pelindo Regional 4 is optimistic that it will be able to support the smooth movement of sea transportation during the Christmas and New Year holidays this time. ***
